The history of Christmas is very rich, as it is both an important religious festival in Christianity and a blend of ancient polytheistic folk traditions. In short, the origins of Christmas can be summarized in the following core dimensions:
1. Religious Origin: Commemorating the birth of Jesus
Core Meaning: The English word Christmas comes from "Christ's Mass," and it is the day when Christians celebrate the birth of their Savior, **Jesus Christ**.
Biblical Story: According to the Bible, Jesus was born to the Virgin Mary through the power of the Holy Spirit. At that time, Mary and her husband Joseph traveled to Bethlehem to register for the census. Because the inns were full, Jesus was ultimately born in a manger in a stable. This scene later became the most important artistic and decorative theme of Christmas.
2. Establishment of the Date: Why December 25th?
In fact, the Bible does not explicitly record the exact date of Jesus' birth. There are two main viewpoints regarding the choice of December 25th:
Conversion of a Pagan Festival: In ancient Rome, around December 25th was the winter solstice, and it was also the day when Romans celebrated the birth of the "Invincible Sun God" (Sol Invictus). With the spread of Christianity in the Roman Empire, the Church decided in the 4th century to set Jesus' birth on this day, symbolizing the coming of the "Sun of Righteousness," replacing the original pagan rituals.
Calculation and Deduction: Another tradition holds that the day of Jesus' crucifixion (March 25th) was also the day of his conception, and counting forward nine months leads to December 25th.
